Location: Evanston, IL
Situated in an area with many old historic homes and closely touching the Northwestern University campus, this project’s vision was to start renovating an older home that turned out to be a total rehab. We updated it with a new front porch and windows on the exterior siding, but we kept the existing brick on the rear. The addition on the back would eventually contain a primary bathroom and closet to expand the main suite. We took the interiors down to the studs, added new insulation and high-efficiency mechanical systems, and helped make it significantly more energy efficient. While we channeled our focus toward the interior, the backyard was certainly not forgotten. There was a natural backyard space existing there, but we implemented a patio, a garden, and a fire pit to help open up the back of the house to access that terrace and patio through the warmer months.
